The Northumberland County Seniors championship was played over a very well presented Gosforth GC on 6/7 July 2022.
Day 1 – 6th July 2022
Some 60+ players played on day 1 of the championship in extremely strong blustery conditions with intermittent showers. A vert trying day for good scoring.
The scores for the 15 man-cut to play day 2 ranged from 74 (+5) to 78 (+9). Very close going into day 2.
Day 2 – 7th July 2022
The much changed and improved weather on day 2 lead to much lower scoring.
However 36 holes could not find a winner. Two players were tied for the lead after 36 holes namely Paul Taylor ( Whitley Bay GC ) and Steve Anderton ( Backworth GC ) with identical scores of 74,71 who played together throughout. In the play-off on the 19th hole Steve unfortunately found a fairway bunker down the left with Paul just avoiding the same bunker. Steve dropped a shot and Paul prevailed with a par at the 19th hole.
The winner of the County Seniors Strokeplay Championship and the Paddy Baker Rose Bowl with a total score of 145 (74,71) was Paul Taylor Whitley Bay GC.
The winner of the Best Net score over the 1st 18 holes and the Tim Bull Trophy with a score of 76-6 = 70 net was Alan Ross Northumberland GC
The winner of the Best Gross score for the over 65’s and the Richard Johnson Decanter with a score of 75 was Michael Brown Morpeth GC
The top 8 qualifiers from the stroke play championship will play off for the Seniors County Matchplay Championship and the Mike Fleming Salver.
The semi-finals and final will be played on Sunday 24th July 2022.
A huge thank you to all the staff and members for hosting this event and showcasing their course in great condition.
