A field of 57 participated in the Seniors Championship at Morpeth Golf Club on Wednesday 11 June, with the top 15 making it through to day 2.
The slick greens and tricky pin positions, led to a challenging day, with the cut falling at 8 over par.
Leading the field was Morpeth player Sandy Twynholm, who carded a level par 71 to lead by 4 overnight.
The Tim Bull Trophy, awarded to the player with the best nett score on day 1 went to Conor Browne of Hexham Golf Club, with a nett 69, winning on the countback from Club colleague Tony Clark.
The battle for the RW Johnson Decanter, on offer for the best gross over 36 holes for the over 65’s was contested between Alan McBride of Bedlingtonshire Golf Club and Nigel Mills of The Northumberland Golf Club. Alan came out on top and won the Decanter for the second year running.
A strong south easterly breeze greeted the players in Round 2, and it was home favourite Sandy Twynholm who got the job done, winning his 2nd Seniors Championship, shooting a 1 over par total, after shooting rounds of 71 & 72, winning by 6 from County colleague Ken Cairns.
Well done to Sandy, who goes on to repesent Northumberland in the Seniors Champion of Champions event, at Woodhall Spa.
The top 8 Players enter the matchplay stages, where they will compete for The Mike Fleming Salver, the matches are as follows:
