We were treated to a fantastic weekend of golf at Westerhope Golf Club, where the County Strokeplay Championship took place.
Firstly a huge thank you to the Club who presented their course in excellent condition and looked after us so well in the clubhouse – we really appreciate it.
On to the golf, where Phil Ridden of the City of Newcastle GC held a 5 Shot lead from the Northumberland GC player, Harrison Sewell going into Sunday – After a tense opening both players started to make birdies and turn the battle for the title into a 2 horse race. After trading blows for 18 holes, Phil carded a 67 to Harrison’s 68.
A big downpour at lunchtime didn’t dampen the spirits going into the last round- with a nice sprinkling of support out on the course.
Ultimately it was Phil who managed to get the job done, winning by 6 on an incredible 19 under par, with rounds of 67, 65, 67 and 70, winning his 3rd Strokeplay Trophy in the process.
Harrison finished runner up, with his County colleagues Rob Henderson and Cameron Thoburn coming 3rd and 4th respectively.
Home player Chris Henderson secured the best nett.
The first 36 Holes of the event determined the Junior County Champion as well as the winner of the John Henderson Salver. It was Morpeth youngster, Alan Young who became the Junior County Champion, with rounds of 72 and 78, earning himself a place in the Junior Champion of Champions Event at Woodhall Spa in September. Phil Ridden won the John Henderson Salver, with his opening rounds of 67 and 65. Well done to both players.
Well done to all of the players and congratulations to all of the prize winners.
